What is Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
CRRT is suggested to kidney patients to provide renal support and stabilize their condition. It is more like 24–hour dialysis and filters the blood completely. It is performed mechanically with the help of a CRRT machine which is incorporated with pump-driven venovenous extracorporeal circuits. This makes this procedure complex and special attention to the health condition, pressure monitors, and air detectors.

- Volume Overload
Due to AKI, the kidney’s ability to regulate fluid retention is disrupted and leads to volume overload.
- Acid-base abnormalities
Kidney failure can lead to problems like progressive metabolic acidosis, and in such cases, the initiation of CRRT is suggested to maintain the pH. It is also suggested for patients suffering from acute lung injury.
- Severe Electrolyte Abnormalities
Due to kidney injury or failure, one can suffer from severe hyperkalemia, which is life-threatening and requires immediate treatment. CRRT regulates the potassium concentration in the body to control hyperkalemia. Other electrolyte abnormalities can be hyponatremia, hyperphosphatemia, etc., which can be corrected with this treatment procedure.
- Uremia & progressive/persistent azotemia
One may experience some uremic symptoms like encephalopathy, encephalopathy, platelet dysfunction, etc., due to kidney malfunction. This therapy can help in improving health conditions in such situations.
